Quantum Computing – Beyond the Headlines

Billion-dollar investments, government strategies, vendor claims about revolutionary capability. For executives making investment, partnership, or strategic positioning decisions about quantum computing, the challenge is separating what is real today from what is aspirational, and understanding what it would take to capture value when the technology matures.

This course provides a rigorous, hype-free assessment of quantum computing from a business perspective. No physics required. The focus is on what current hardware can actually do, which applications have demonstrated value, what infrastructure and talent requirements look like, and how to position your organization without either committing too early or waiting too long.

Course Outline

Module 1. What Quantum Computers Can Actually Do Today (90 minutes)

How quantum computers work in plain language. The distinction between physical qubits and logical qubits and why it determines everything about near-term capability. The five major hardware approaches and their tradeoffs. What quantum advantage means and where it has been demonstrated. What “quantum supremacy” claims actually proved and what they did not. The error correction challenge and its implications for timeline expectations.

Module 2. Use Cases, Investment, and Strategic Positioning (90 minutes)

Applications with demonstrated or near-term value: quantum chemistry, materials simulation, and optimization. Applications that remain years away: general-purpose quantum machine learning, large-scale factoring. How to evaluate vendor use case claims. Quantum cloud platforms: what each major provider offers. Talent requirements and where the bottleneck is. Strategic positioning frameworks: engage early (pilot programs, talent building, partnership), watch and prepare (monitoring, readiness planning), or wait (and what you might miss). How to build a board-ready quantum computing strategy.

The briefing runs four hours in total: three hours of content across the two modules, plus breaks and a working exercise.

Prerequisites

None.

Who this course is for

C-suite executives, strategy leaders, R&D directors, and senior managers evaluating quantum computing investments, partnerships, or organizational positioning.

What you’ll be able to do afterward

  • Explain quantum computing’s potential and limitations in business terms
  • Distinguish between physical and logical qubits and understand why headlines are routinely misleading
  • Evaluate the five major hardware approaches and the organizations behind them
  • Assess which industry applications are realistic today versus aspirational
  • Evaluate vendor quantum computing claims using a structured framework
  • Understand the quantum sovereignty dimension: how geopolitics is reshaping technology access

What you leave with

You leave with the course handbook, a PDF of the full material with the instructor notes written out in place of the slides’ bullet points, and a PDF copy of Quantum Systems Integration, included at no extra cost. The handbook is yours to keep. For most organizations, that shared reference is the clearest return on a training budget.

Enrollment includes 180 days of access to the online on-demand course. Where that course is not yet published, the 180 days start on the day it is.

Where this course fits

Nothing is required, and no technical background is assumed. Quantum Technology for Investors if capital allocation is part of your remit, and Quantum Security for Executives for the risk side of the same technology.

Why we teach this

The material comes from Quantum Systems Integration, the reference text on quantum computing, networking, and sensing written by the course author, and from faculty who work with quantum engineering and integration teams. We teach what we have had to get right in the field. The course teaches the judgment calls, and leaves vendor roadmaps to the vendors.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion, you will receive a Quantum Academy certificate of completion. This is not a professional certification.
