Quantum sensing is the quantum technology closest to widespread practical deployment. This course provides an honest introduction to quantum sensing: the principles, the leading device classes, and the applications in navigation, timing, medical, and defense contexts.
Course Outline
Module 1. Quantum Sensing Principles
How quantum sensing achieves precision beyond classical limits. The quantum properties exploited: superposition, entanglement, and quantum coherence. Why quantum sensors outperform classical sensors for specific measurements. The general principles across sensor types.
Module 2. Device Classes
The major quantum sensor types. Atomic clocks: the most mature quantum sensing technology. Quantum magnetometers: medical and defense applications. Quantum gravimeters: subsurface imaging and navigation. Quantum imaging and other emerging sensor types.
Module 3. Applications
Real-world applications deployable today. Precision timing and its role in telecommunications, finance, and navigation. Medical applications: magnetoencephalography and beyond. Defense and security applications. Navigation in GPS-denied environments. Subsurface and geophysical sensing.
Module 4. The Market and What’s Next
The quantum sensing market and its trajectory. Which applications are commercial today versus emerging. Key players and technologies. How quantum sensing fits alongside the other quantum technologies.
