From Cryogenics to Control Electronics to Software

What does it actually take to build and operate a quantum computer? This course covers the full stack: cryogenics, control electronics, the software stack, and the physical infrastructure quantum computers require. You will learn about quantum-HPC integration, total cost of ownership, the Quantum Open Architecture movement toward modular and interoperable systems, and the emerging alternatives to current approaches: including the modular assembly of quantum computers from components.

Course Outline

Module 1. Physical Infrastructure

The physical requirements of a quantum computer. Cryogenic systems and dilution refrigerators. Shielding, vibration isolation, and environmental control. Power and facility requirements. What it takes to house and run quantum hardware.

Module 2. Control Electronics and Software Stack

The classical infrastructure that operates a quantum computer. Microwave and signal generation. Control electronics and readout systems. The software stack from circuit to hardware. Calibration and characterization systems.

Module 3. Integration and Operations

Quantum-HPC integration. Operating quantum computers in production. Total cost of ownership: capital, operational, and personnel. Maintenance and calibration as ongoing operations. Modular assembly: building quantum systems from interoperable components.

Module 4. Open Architecture and What’s Next

The Quantum Open Architecture movement toward modularity and interoperability. Emerging alternatives to current approaches. The trend toward modular, assembled quantum systems. How modular assembly is changing who can build a quantum computer.

Prerequisites

None unless otherwise noted. These courses are designed to be accessible to motivated professionals without a physics background.
