Preparation for the Certified Quantum Network Engineer Exam

Quantum networking is moving from research demonstrations to commercial deployment. QKD networks are operational in multiple countries. Entanglement distribution over metropolitan and intercity distances has been demonstrated. Standards bodies are developing interoperability frameworks. For network engineers and security professionals, evaluating these developments requires understanding the technology at a level that goes beyond marketing materials.

CQNE training provides that depth. The curriculum covers QKD protocols, quantum network architectures, hardware components, security analysis (including implementation vulnerabilities that theoretical security proofs do not address), classical-quantum network integration, and where QKD is actually deployed.

Course Outline

Module 1. Quantum Networking Fundamentals

The physical principles: photon polarization, entanglement, the no-cloning theorem, and why these properties enable secure key distribution. What makes quantum networking fundamentally different from classical secure communications. The distinction between QKD (exchanging cryptographic keys) and full quantum networking (distributing entanglement for computation and communication). Where quantum networking fits alongside PQC in secure communications.

Module 2. QKD Protocols

BB84 and its variants: how the protocol works step by step, parameter estimation, privacy amplification, and key rate calculation. Decoy-state protocols and why they are essential for practical implementations. Measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD: removing detector vulnerabilities. Twin-field QKD: extending range beyond the direct transmission limit. Continuous-variable QKD: an alternative approach using standard telecom components. Protocol comparison: security properties, key rates, distance limits, and hardware requirements.

Module 3. Quantum Network Architectures

Point-to-point QKD links: the simplest deployment model, range limitations, and where it is sufficient. Trusted-node networks: extending range through intermediate nodes that are physically secured, the trust model and its limitations. Entanglement-based networks: the long-term vision for quantum networking, quantum repeaters, quantum memories, and current technology readiness. Satellite QKD: overcoming terrestrial range limits through free-space optical links. Metro networks versus long-haul connections. Network topology design for different security requirements.

Module 4. Hardware Evaluation

Evaluating the components that make up a QKD system. Single-photon sources: attenuated lasers versus true single-photon emitters, the performance implications. Single-photon detectors: avalanche photodiodes versus superconducting nanowire detectors, dark counts, timing jitter, detection efficiency. Quantum random number generators: why quality randomness is critical and how to evaluate generators. Optical components: fiber, free-space links, wavelength considerations. System-level evaluation: key rate, maximum distance, form factor, power requirements, and integration interfaces.

Module 5. Security Analysis

The gap between theoretical security proofs and practical security. Side-channel attacks against real QKD implementations: photon-number splitting attacks, detector blinding attacks, Trojan-horse attacks. How these attacks work, how they are detected, and what countermeasures exist. The role of certification and testing standards (ETSI QKD, Common Criteria). Security analysis methodology: how to assess a QKD implementation’s actual security rather than relying on the theoretical proof alone.

Module 6. Classical-Quantum Integration

QKD systems do not replace classical networking infrastructure, and they augment it. Key management: how quantum-derived keys are handed off to classical encryption systems, key lifecycle management, and key storage requirements. Network management: monitoring QKD link health, managing key inventories, handling link failures and rerouting. Integration with existing security architectures: how QKD-derived keys feed into IPsec, MACsec, or application-layer encryption. Operational considerations: installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Module 7. Where QKD Is Actually Deployed

Operational QKD networks: China’s Beijing-Shanghai backbone, European initiatives (EuroQCI, UK Quantum Network), commercial deployments in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. Standards development: ETSI ISG QKD, ITU-T SG13 and SG17, ISO/IEC. Government programs and funding. Vendors: established players and emerging companies. Market maturity assessment: where quantum networking is production-ready versus still developmental.

Format and Delivery

This program is available online on-demand, live online, in person, and as private team training; current prices for each format are in the booking section below. Live online and in-person sessions include 180 days of access to the online on-demand course. Where that course is not yet published, the 180 days start on the day it is. Training format and exam format are independent: however you train, the exam is delivered as a proctored assessment, under arrangements confirmed when you book.

Live online and in-person sessions run 24 hours of instruction across four days, six hours of teaching each day within a seven and a half hour schedule that includes lunch and breaks. The online on-demand course covers the same material at a self-paced pace of roughly 40 hours.

Prerequisites

None. No quantum physics prerequisite, the course builds from fundamentals.

Who this course is for

Network engineers, security engineers, telecom professionals, government and defense technology specialists, and technical evaluators responsible for assessing or deploying quantum networking.

What you’ll be able to do afterward

  • Explain QKD protocols (BB84, E91, MDI-QKD, decoy-state) and their security properties
  • Evaluate quantum network architectures (point-to-point, trusted-node, entanglement-based)
  • Assess quantum networking hardware (single-photon detectors, sources, QRNGs)
  • Analyze QKD security including implementation vulnerabilities and side-channel risks
  • Design classical-quantum network integration approaches
  • Evaluate global quantum networking deployments and vendor offerings

What you leave with

You leave with the course handbook, a PDF of the full material with the instructor notes written out in place of the slides’ bullet points, and a PDF copy of Quantum Systems Integration, included at no extra cost. The handbook is yours to keep. For most organizations, that shared reference is the clearest return on a training budget.

Enrollment includes 180 days of access to the online on-demand course. Where that course is not yet published, the 180 days start on the day it is.

Where this course fits

Nothing is required. Introduction to Quantum Computing or Quantum Computing Fundamentals both help if the physics is unfamiliar. CQNA Network Architect Training is the design-level step up. Quantum Networking and QKD Essentials fills any gaps in the underlying physics.

Why we teach this

The material comes from Quantum Systems Integration, the reference text on quantum computing, networking, and sensing written by the course author, and from faculty who work with quantum engineering and integration teams. We teach what we have had to get right in the field. The course teaches the judgment calls, and leaves vendor roadmaps to the vendors.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion, you will receive a Quantum Academy certificate of completion. This is not a professional certification.
