Quantum Networking and QKD Essentials

How quantum key distribution works, where it fits alongside PQC rather than instead of it, network architectures, and an honest view of deployment costs, constraints, and maturity.

How Quantum Key Distribution Actually Works

Quantum key distribution is often misunderstood – both overhyped as a replacement for all cryptography and dismissed as impractical. This course provides an honest, grounded understanding of how QKD works, where it genuinely fits alongside post-quantum cryptography (not instead of it), the network architectures involved, and the real costs, constraints, and maturity of the technology.

Course Outline

Module 1. How QKD Works

The physical principles behind quantum key distribution. Why QKD offers information-theoretic security. The BB84 protocol explained. What QKD actually provides and what it does not. The no-cloning theorem and eavesdropping detection.

Module 2. QKD and PQC: Complementary, Not Competing

Where QKD fits relative to post-quantum cryptography. The strengths and limitations of each. Use cases where QKD adds value over PQC alone. Why most organizations need PQC and only some need QKD. Honest assessment of the tradeoffs.

Module 3. Network Architectures

QKD network topologies: point-to-point, trusted-node, and the path toward quantum networks. Range limitations and how they are addressed. Satellite QKD. The current state of deployed QKD networks worldwide.

Module 4. Deployment Realities

The real costs of QKD deployment. Infrastructure requirements. Operational constraints. Technology maturity and standards. When QKD makes sense and when it does not. How to evaluate QKD vendor claims.

Prerequisites

None unless otherwise noted. These courses are designed to be accessible to motivated professionals without a physics background.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion, you will receive a Quantum Academy certificate of completion.

Who this course is for

Network engineers, security engineers, telecom professionals, government and defense technology specialists, and technical evaluators assessing quantum networking proposals.

What you’ll be able to do afterward

  • Explain QKD protocols (BB84, E91, MDI-QKD, decoy-state) and the security properties they provide
  • Evaluate quantum network architectures: point-to-point, trusted-node (and why “trusted” is doing a lot of work), and entanglement-based
  • Assess quantum networking hardware components (single-photon detectors, sources, QRNGs)
  • Analyze QKD security including the gap between theoretical proofs and implementation reality
  • Evaluate global quantum networking deployments (China’s Hefei-Shanghai backbone, European deployments, US programs)
  • Determine when QKD is an appropriate technology choice and when PQC alone is sufficient

What you leave with

You leave with the course handbook, a PDF of the full material with the instructor notes written out in place of the slides’ bullet points, and a PDF copy of Quantum Systems Integration, included at no extra cost. The handbook is yours to keep. For most organizations, that shared reference is the clearest return on a training budget.

Enrollment includes 180 days of access to the online on-demand course. Where that course is not yet published, the 180 days start on the day it is.

Where this course fits

Nothing is required. Quantum Computing Fundamentals helps where the physics is unfamiliar. CQNE Network Engineer Training for the credential, and CQNA Network Architect Training for design-level work.

Why we teach this

The material comes from Quantum Systems Integration, the reference text on quantum computing, networking, and sensing written by the course author, and from faculty who work with quantum engineering and integration teams. We teach what we have had to get right in the field. The course teaches the judgment calls, and leaves vendor roadmaps to the vendors.
