The Quantum Threat to Blockchain and Cryptocurrency
Blockchain and cryptocurrency systems face a unique variant of the quantum threat. Bitcoin’s ECDSA signature scheme will eventually fall to Shor’s algorithm, but Bitcoin’s quantum timeline differs from RSA’s because the exposure window depends on how and when public keys are revealed. Ethereum has five distinct quantum vulnerabilities. And the governance challenge is fundamentally different from enterprise PQC migration: decentralized systems cannot mandate a transition.
This course covers the quantum threat to blockchain infrastructure, the post-quantum signature schemes under consideration, and the governance mechanisms available for decentralized cryptographic migration.
Who Should Take This Course
Blockchain developers, cryptocurrency security researchers, exchange operators, custodians, DeFi architects, and anyone responsible for the security of blockchain-based infrastructure.
What You Will Learn
This course covers the quantum threat and PQC migration as it applies specifically to your sector, including sector-specific regulatory requirements, unique technical constraints, and practical migration strategies aligned with the PQC Migration Framework sector extensions.
Course Outline
Module 1 — Blockchain Cryptographic Exposure
How blockchain uses cryptography differently from traditional systems. Bitcoin’s ECDSA exposure and why the timeline differs from PKI. Ethereum’s five quantum vulnerabilities. The distinction between signature forgery (immediate threat when CRQC arrives) and hash function resistance (not a near-term concern).
Module 2 — The Governance Problem
Why decentralized systems cannot mandate a cryptographic transition. Hard fork versus soft fork approaches. Community coordination challenges. Lessons from previous contentious upgrades. The timeline pressure: migration must happen before a CRQC exists, but consensus takes years.
Module 3 — Post-Quantum Proposals and Migration Paths
Hash-based signatures for Bitcoin (proposed BIP). Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap. Post-quantum signature schemes under consideration by major chains. Wallet migration strategies at scale. Lightning Network and Layer 2 quantum exposure. Smart contract cryptographic dependencies.
