Drawn as a diagram, a cross-border payment has about seven hops, each labeled “encrypted”. Opened up, the customer’s first hop involves four cryptographic objects with three owners and three renewal calendars. The SWIFT gateway hop involves at least five, and the bank can change only two of them itself.
PCI DSS v4.0 requirement 12.3.3 already asks for the cipher suites and protocols in use to be documented and reviewed every 12 months. We sort a payment’s keys and certificates by owner and required lifetime, and turn the result into a migration order.
