Vaile co-wrote the Cryptographic Concentration Framework and teaches the governance side of cryptographic transition

CHICAGO, October 5, 2026 – Steve Vaile, co-author of the Cryptographic Concentration Framework and a director at Quantum Security Defence, has joined Quantum Academy as a Principal Instructor. He teaches the governance side of cryptographic transition, including how a board reaches a decision, what a supervisor will ask for and how to measure dependency risk.

Vaile is part of Quantum Academy’s initial group of instructors. The Academy, which opened on October 2, 2026, trains and certifies professionals in post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum technologies. Principal Instructor is the second-highest of its four faculty ranks, after Fellow.

Vaile also works at Applied Quantum, the consulting firm founded by Marin Ivezic, on post-quantum cryptography and resilience for banking and financial services. Quantum Academy is a brand of Post-Quantum Institute, a company separate from Applied Quantum.

With Ivezic, Vaile co-wrote the Cryptographic Concentration Framework, which measures how many of the vendors an institution treats as independent rely on the same cryptographic dependency. The two also co-wrote the Applied Quantum CBOM Profile, an open CycloneDX property taxonomy for cryptographic bills of materials. Both are release candidates, with version 1.0 of the framework due in November and the profile open for comment until October 31.

Vaile co-founded Quantum Security Defence, a community of quantum security professionals with more than 1,200 members in more than 40 countries, and is one of its directors.

Vaile joined the UK Armed Forces at 16 and trained as an electrical engineer in the Royal Navy. He then spent more than a decade in causal and root-cause analysis for defense and telecommunications networks, at Groupe Bull, RiverSoft, and EMC’s SMARTS and Voyence businesses.

“In that work he traced how a fault in one network component affects the others,” said Ivezic, the founder of Quantum Academy. “Organizations now need the same analysis for their cryptographic estates.”

Vaile later founded a data communications analytics firm in the Gulf, which was acquired, and co-founded Mad Monkey, a hostel group in Southeast Asia. In Cambodia he also advised on the country’s first national credit bureau, working with the International Monetary Fund and the National Bank of Cambodia.
